Ryan Adams: Live at Exit/In, Nashville, TN. October 28, 1999.

Normalcy seems to be returning to the music blogging world after the spate of Ryan Adams posts that occupied everyone in the past few months. A casual visit to the spectacular Hype Machine blog aggregator will confirm this-the gifted one has not been talked about since I Am Fuel, You Are Friends brought us two recent back to back sets he played at The Palace of Fine Arts and the 12 Galaxies club in San Francisco. Anyways, here's a "lest we forget" Ryan set from the early days; pre-Heartbreaker. Most of the songs you probably already heard if you have the Destroyer sessions or early official releases. Songs like "Onslow County", "Folklore", and "Return of the Grievous Angel" I did not know of till now (probably covers), but them some of you are geekier than me and may know, so I won't bother with the hours of history sourcing (I have a day job you know). Musically, this is a very calm acoustic set, reminiscent of the mood of Heartbreaker, and solid proof of Ryan's genius. Enjoy.

Sure enough -- Return of the Grievous Angel is a Gram Parsons tune. And, of course, Revelator is a Welch number.

Not sure about the other unknowns. But, damn, what a set -- thanks for posting it!

Helpless, of course, is by Neil (Young, that is) - based on a quick Web search, looks like Onslow County and Folklore were written by Ryan himself (Adams, that is). Great stuff - thanks.

Just to clear another track up, and as a resident myself, Onslow County is about our mutual home county - in which our hometown of Jacksonville, NC is located.

And yes, Onslow County is exactly as he describes.

You can find low-to-high-quality versions of these tracks here at Internet Archive.
That is an excellent set. His "variable quality knob" was turned in the right direction that evening.

hello,

I'm new to the music blog scene. I remember a few years ago Ryan did a show for Mtv. I believe he was in Jamaica or some other Carribean island and he absolutely blew me away with the songs he played! Does anyone remember this? Would anyone know where I could get copies of that performance? Thanks,Matt
