Wedding Song
Folks, it turns out this September I'll say "I Do" to the woman in my life (this is a reference to a specific person, not to any woman in my life at that time). In keeping with the traditions of our forefathers, we have decided to pull out all the stops and ipod the event. The obvious reason is to save money for more drinks, but it may or may not have something to do with my obvious inventiveness and ability to sell concepts to a bride in training (a difficult concept, my friends). To make this happen, I have to put together a playlist of ideal wedding songs with specific instructions not to include anything from The Hives, Sunn O))) or my itunes library.
So here's the deal-I am throwing this out to all you dear readers of this blessed blog. Please leave a comment recommending a song or songs you think would be ideal for a posh lush wedding. Don't ignore this invitation, my emotional ability to keep this blog running depends on it. To get you started, here are my own suggestions which will surely not make the final list.
Here Comes Your Man The Pixies (this is my idea of an ideal procession song, a fresh alternative to the awful "Here Comes The Bride")
A Good Man Is Hard To Find Tom Waits (because I know...)
Blitzkrieg Pop The Ramones (first musical interlude)
Don't Call The Police Moneybrother (just for the groove, I swear...)

did the ipod for my own wedding and thought i had a killer post ceremony dance mix. the one song that finally got everyone onto the dance floor was the modern lovers - roadrunner.
ah wedding songs...romance, irony, humour and rock...as their are many, I would recommend etta james-
at last
stop the wedding (she'll love that one)
loving you more every day
these foolish things
prisoner of love
I prefer you
you can leave your hat on (as a reminder of what's to come..pardon the pun;)
Marriage is for Old Folks- Nina Simone
Single Again- Fiery Furnaces
i just got married too: our ceremony playlist included Leo Kottke-,Rings (our processional); Otis Redding-Cupid; Bob Dylan-Buckets of rain: Built to Spill-The Weather; Yo La Tengo-My little corner of the world..and a couple more
naive melody - talking heads
cat power- lived in bars/could we
Hmm. I've been meaning to do this for a while, seeing as how a friend of mine is also soliciting songs for his upcoming wedding. This seems like a good time to go ahead and sort through the music collection. I winnowed this down a fair bit, trying to insure they were songs that would have meaning to everyone, and not just to me personally, as well as being appropriate to a wedding setting, with family and clergy around. Here goes...
Johnny Cash - First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
- Johnny's deep voice stands out from the usual more uplifting sounding songs played at weddings, but still resonates with the love and joy of the song. Also, he instantly adds gravitas to any mix you compile.
Paul Weller - Going Places
- At first listen, this song seems only tangently wedding themed, but I think the message, as well as the upbeat melody make it a good choice.
Daniel Lanois - I Love You
- This is another seemingly odd choice, with some of the lyrics coming off as non sequitors, but the real focus of the song comes through extremely well, and extremely romantic.
Might I suggest "Joy" by Apollo 100, a pop remake of JS Bach's "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring." My wife and I used it for our recessional music last June.
"Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton
First, congratulations.
As for the music . . . it may be overplayed on a theoretical level, but "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green is required.
Bridal Dancing Queen by the Wedding Band off of the Muriel's Wedding Soundtrack. You have to really like ABBA but hey, there are lots of us out here still.
because i just came across your post about mermaid avenue, there's some incredibly sweet romantic songs on there:
someday some morning sometime
hesitating beauty
one by one
and probably a few others im forgetting
jockjams vol 2.
My top picks would be the Pixies' "La La Love You" and Billy Bragg and Wilco's "Ingrid Bergman." I also really like the suggestion above of Talking Heads' "Naive Melody"
Try "Cuddle Up" or "Only With You" by The Beach Boys...both are Dennis Wilson songs circa 1972...great stuff...
I wish my own wedding could be ipodded, but I've been shut down... a year in advance! I'm currently battling to keep the New Country (getting married in a small city) to a bare minimum, no Elvis, no Jive Bunny... but apparently we have to please the old people and we should only be picking tunes that everyone will know. The lowest common denominator wins again!
A good first dance is of course "You're The Best Thing" by Style Council. The My Most Serene Republic's acoustic remix of "Ageless Beauty" by Stars might also work, but doublecheck those lyrics.
Wedding List..
love your pick for here comes your man and la, la love
the cure, just like heaven or close to me
REM-at my most beautiful
the beatles-something
sam cooke-you send me
prince-forever in my life or adore
The Who - You Better You Bet
Awesome song for looking forward to a long and understanding relationship.
