Joanna Newsom: Live at Academy 2, Manchester, UK, 14 April 2005.

*Updated some links. Will do the rest tomorrow.

This is a set for those of you who became aware of the beautiful harp-playing Ms. Joanna Newsom following the release of the critically-acclaimed "on my Best of 2006 list" album Ys. Of course, Ms. Newsom already won most of us over with the intricately woven and beautiful 2004 LP titled The Milk-Eyed Mender. Many songs on this setlist are live versions of the latter release, a couple from the 2003 self-released EP Yarn and Glue, and two new songs (Sawdust and Diamonds, and the fantastic Only Skin) which later appear on Ys. A real keeper.

Ms. Newsom is backed by a lady called Ariella on this one. No info on Ariella, leave a comment if you know who she is.

And just because I like to be excessive, here's Joanna's cover of one of my favorite songs of all time, Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix, performed live at the Meltdown Festival in London, UK, June 26, 2005.

Grab this now before the bandwidth devil strikes. If you are late, then go to the Hype Machine for a listen.

Buy Joanna Newsom's music.
Read about most things Joanna Newsom here.

And finally:
Download a cover of Peach, Plum, Pear by the fantastic Final Fantasy (aka Owen Pallett) from Brooklyn Vegan. If you don't know Final Fantasy, you should. This Canadian violinist is our answer to Andrew Bird, and his 2006 album He Poos Clouds which won the Canadian Polaris Music Prize (our answer to UK's Mercury Prize) - over acts like the New Pornographers, Broken Social Scene, Metric, Sarah Hammer and Wolf Parade - is also on my Best of 2006 list.

Can't Stop Playing Canasta!

Currently in SUPER LOVE with this Chicago sextet called Canasta. I hardly ever do two posts about one band, but these guys deserve a listen. Tell me that song "Sympathetic Vibrations" doesn't remind you on Belle & Sebastian!

Just A Star
