Hello there! You all rock!

Hello to everyone reading this fantastic little piece of music blog heaven. None of you have any idea of who I am, so don't feel out of the loop. My name is Kristy Parker and I've secretly been downloading Pierre's generous live sets and rarities for the past week or so. When he suggested opening this blog up to another voice, I decided to jump at the chance. You see, I've been running a little underground music blog for the past four years called Vintage Rock. You've never heard of it? Well that could be because we only have a small cult like following. I take the time to write researched, thought out posts that nobody ever responds to. I'm getting a bit fed up with that, so I thought, why not expand my horizons and get my writing out in a different format! I'm new to the blogger system since I use blogdrive, but I can learn pretty quickly.

I'm not as high tech as Pierre when it comes to music files and all that, but I do know good music when I hear it. I listen to anything from John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" to Joy Division's "Dead Souls on any given day. I delight in finding that rare band that nobody seems to appreciate, and then getting people turned on to their tunes. Nothing is really more rewarding to me than knowing that I help expand people's musical horizons.

I think Pierre will be focusing more on rarities and live tracks, while I will be focusing more on the alternative music scene and album reviews. I also like coming up with creative mix tape ideas, so I might download some pre-made mixes for you featuring songs you mostly likely haven't heard. Trust me, I won't post any top 40 bull-crap on here...its pretty much my mission in life to draw people away from the radios altogether, unless you're listening to an underground college radio dj god. Hey, I DJ at my college...hoping in vain that someone's listening through the murky airwaves. One of the biggest thrills of my life, sad as it is, is when someone called me and thanked me for playing a Pixies tune.

Anyway here's some basic information about me if you're curious at all who's been rambling the last few paragraphs:

Cuff the Duke: In Session at CBC Studio 2, Vancouver, 03 Apr 2006.

With every release, Oshawa boys Cuff the Duke seem to be edging closer to their very own Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain or The Moon and Antartica i.e. the one really really good album that is the epitome of time spent hammering away at sounds, words, and the prospects of stardom. Their 2005 eponymous album takes their alt-country groove into indie rock territory, the instrumentation is energetic and fresh, the sounds are more fleshed out and consistent, and there is nothing ordinary about it all. Vocalist Wayne Petti is brilliant, and on songs like "The Difference Between Us", his deep throaty voice can be arresting, inspiring. I suspect they might hit perfect pitch on the next one or two releases, and I'll surely be there to say I told you so. Meanwhile, enjoy this studio session set, and be sure to check them out.

Many thanks to all of you who have played the "guess the blog name" game so far-you guys rock! It's glorious considering I am not so sure I know what the name means myself, although there is a story behind it. But I have learnt so much about the name from your responses and you guys are really funny. I have decided to feature your suggestions on the blog title, one at a time, each for a one week period. Keep it coming!

Upcoming weekend posts: Some live Built to Spill, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, and the Sunn O))) Peel Sessions.

KNK Hits 100K! 200 Posts!! Ohmigod!

While you were sleeping, or masticating your food, three important events happened. One: this humble blog had it 100, 000th visitor stop by. Two: I just posted post number 200. Three: I found an anime photo to express how I feel about this. Now, this may happen everyday in your digital life, but this is a significant event for this little Nigerian boy, who is just trying to be the best he can, stay off drugs, and talk about the things he always wanted to talk about (sob, sob). To celebrate this emotional but momentous event, here's 3 things that's going to happen.

1. I'm giving away a brand new copy of Neil Young's After The Gold Rush as a thank you for stopping by gesture. Since I have so many readers, ohmigosh-100, 000! and I can't give out 100, 000 cds, I have to establish a fair system for doing this. I propose a competition. Here's how it works. Any person who can correctly guess or come close to guessing the meaning of this weird blog name of mine "KWAYA NA KISSER" (and there's been tons of controversy over the meaning and/or appropriateness of this name) takes home this baby. If no one comes close, then we do the itunes thing and give it to whoever leaves the 100th comment on this post. So here kids, go for it! Drop a comment on whatever pleases or annoys you, gibberish or intelli-talk!

Winner will have to provide a mailing address.

2. How about opening this blog up to some contributors, eh? So here's the deal-drop me a comment or email if you want to join this blog team. Two max will be selected. Qualifications: A wicked sense of humor and ability to find interesting music. Nothing more, nothing less.

3. Here's some wicked Radiohead rarities, live tracks, ring tones, whatevers, tossed my way by the fantastic Joey (thanks!!!). Enjoy the moment, life's too short!

15 Minutes To Midnight: The Jeremiad Continues.

11.45pm. The darkness had long descended. I finally listen to Sunn O)))'s Black One from start to finish. Final note from Solstitium Fulminate and my paws are buried in my walls, my head buzzing like a colony of mosquitoes, my pulse epileptic. Music should not treat you this way. But wait...did I just press repeat? Hell, here comes my Bermuda...

A Mighty Fine Post On Roddy Frame: Live at Darwin Suite, Assembly Rooms, Derby, 15 May 2006.

First time I did a Roddy Frame a.k.a. Aztec Camera post (see olde related postes below), I was pleasantly surprised by the comments it attracted, largely because I thought Roddy was the greatest living indie secret the world was yet to know or would never know. Now that I know better, I guess its proper to state that this guy is arguably one of if not the finest singer-songwriters alive today, annd definitely the best Scot of that ilk still around. Roddy just put out a new cd titled Western Skies which I hear is essential listening. I'll probably feature some songs on this 'ere blog when my cd arrives from the market (mp3s just won't cut it this time).

The following is a wonderful set at the Assembly Rooms in Derby on his recently completed UK tour. My lord, twenty songs! Two encores. Classic Aztec Camera and new songs from Western Skies. The stuff that a fan's dreams are made off. It appears Roddy enjoyed playing this gig a lot as he writes on his website, "Derby was a very 'musical' gig for me. I've never been more in the moment or into the songs. Thank you."

No, thank you.

Linda Ronstadt Does Torch: The Keeping Out Of Mischief Sessions 1981.

From my Singaporean friends comes this really interesting lost album from femme superb Linda Ronstadt. Titled Keeping Out Of Mischief, the never released album was recorded in New York sometime in 1981. On the album, Linda explores the torch song/jazz standard genre. However, she decided she was not ready to be a torch singer and abandoned the album to record Get Closer. Different versions of all the songs, except for "Keeping Out Of Mischief Now" (which is still unreleased), appear in later torch releases by Linda, including 1983’s What’s New, 1984’s Lush Life, and 2004’s Hummin’ To Myself.
